UCLH Research Gateway uses ReDA to help patient recruitment

Whitehall Training’s sister product, ReDA Research Manager, is widely used to run and administer multiple research projects and plays a critical role in leading hospitals, research organisations and national networks. Now London-based, University College Hospital has launched a front end that can be used by the public to learn more about participating in clinical trials.

UCLH is a teaching hospital that can have over 1,000 research projects taking place at any one time. Each year, thousands of patients volunteer to take part in these studies but it can be difficult for the public to find out just what trials are going on and where they could potentially help. Conventional recruitment often uses the participant’s clinician as a go-between but now patients can find out for themselves what studies are taking place.

UCLH’s research details are already in ReDA so creating a user-friendly searchable front end means the information is always up-to-date.  Research Gateway allows patients to search by clinical area or keyword to find trials they could join, or even just to get a better understanding of the work being done.

Recruitment is widely seen as one of the most problematic areas of clinical trials, and the NIHR’s new 70-day target for first patient recruited raises the stakes for fast and effective recruitment in NHS trials. It will be interesting to see the impact that measures like this have on recruitment – especially for less common conditions where the 70-day target could pose a real challenge.
